“Make Your Own Money, or Accept to be Controlled!” -Minister Mutuuzo to Fellow Women

Culture and Gender Minister Peace Mutuuzo called on women to strive for financial independence, emphasizing their crucial role in both their families and society. Known for her unwavering advocacy for women’s rights, Mutuuzo encouraged women to actively participate in economic activities, highlighting that achieving financial stability empowers them to contribute meaningfully to their homes and support their husbands.

During her speech, she remarked, “I see girls saying that women are supposed to be given money. If you want to be given, then accept to be controlled.” This statement underlined her belief that financial self-sufficiency not only fosters independence but also challenges traditional gender norms.

Mutuuzo’s advocacy extends beyond financial empowerment; she has previously condemned harmful cultural practices, particularly the widely criticized ‘visiting the bush’ tradition prevalent in Central and Eastern Uganda, where women undergo painful rituals involving the elongation of labia. Her commitment to eradicating such practices further solidifies her stance on promoting women’s rights and health.

As she urged women to embrace their potential, Mutuuzo’s message resonated with many, reinforcing the idea that empowered women lead to stronger communities and households.
