Towards a global network of women media leaders: WAN-IFRA’s WIN Leadership Accelerator expands reach
2024-08-22. WAN-IFRA Women in News (WIN) is expanding its flagship training and mentorship Leadership Accelerator programme with the launch of the Global Leadership Accelerator. This takes the programme’s reach beyond its traditional 18 markets to offer a transformative opportunity to women who are mid-level newsroom managers in emerging, transitional and fragile states. The Global Leadership Accelerator programme is open to journalists and editors with a passion for the news industry, providing them with a global network, personalised coaching to accelerate their careers, and the necessary skills to lead in a rapidly changing environment.
Applications are now open – until 30 August – to those who qualify.
Proven gains
Since the Leadership Accelerator programme first launched in 2015, it has had a significant impact on the careers of more than 1,500 journalists and editors. The programme, designed to elevate women in the media industry, has consistently delivered results, with an average of 67% of graduates experiencing direct career progression within three months of completion. This includes promotions, lateral moves of their choice, and expanded roles within their organisations.
“For years, the WIN Leadership Accelerator has been a beacon of empowerment for women in media,” said Jane Godia, the programme lead and deputy executive director at WIN.
‘By opening this opportunity to mid-level managers from emerging, transitional and fragile states, we are not only broadening our impact but also ensuring that the next generation of media leaders is diverse, resilient and globally connected.’
How it works
The 12-week programme will run from 26 September to 28 February 2025. Participants will need to commit one to two hours per week, during which they will engage in seminars and discussion-based tutorials led by industry experts. These professionals have direct newsroom leadership and media management experience, ensuring that participants receive relevant, practical training and mentorship.
In addition to the group sessions, each participant will receive one-on-one coaching designed to help them develop a three-to-five year career roadmap tailored to their individual goals and aspirations. This aspect of the programme is particularly valuable, as it provides participants with the guidance and support they need to chart a clear path forward in their careers.
Who is eligible?
Applicants must have five to 10 years of direct newsroom experience, a strong command of English, and a demonstrated passion for the news media industry.
“We are looking for candidates who are not only skilled and experienced but also deeply committed to the values of gender equality, diversity, inclusion and press freedom. These are the leaders who will shape the future of our industry, and we are excited to support their development through this programme,” said Godia.
The results of the WIN Leadership Accelerator speak for themselves. Graduates of the programme have gone on to achieve significant career milestones, with many attributing their success to the skills, network and confidence gained during the programme.
As Nonhlanhla Ngwenya, an alum from Zimbabwe puts it: “This, in my opinion, is one of the best settings for peer-to-peer learning and self-discovery. Peer-to-peer mentoring intrigues me because it allows you to observe your peer for the first time in the role of a mentor, which contradicts the conventional wisdom about what mentoring is.”
Vincent Kahiya, a trainer who has been part of the programme for several years, reflects on its impact:
‘The WIN Leadership Accelerator is more than just a training programme; it’s a career catalyst. Participants leave with a renewed sense of purpose and a clear direction for their careers. It’s incredibly rewarding to see them take what they’ve learned and apply it to achieve their goals.’
Successful applicants will be notified by 7 September. The programme launches on 26 September, marking the beginning of a transformative journey for the next cohort of media leaders.
