The talks, coming as Ukraine’s forces set the ground to push farther into Russia by blowing up two bridges, may address pleas for long-range missiles to push back against Putin’s invaders.
Announcing the meeting, the PM said: “I’m going because the situation in Ukraine is becoming ever-more pressing, as is the situation in the Middle East.”
He spelt out the urgency of the talks as dramatic footage showed Volodymyr Zelensky’s military bomb two pontoon bridges.
Russia had built the military crossings to maintain key supply routes over the Seym river into the occupied Kursk region.
But footage yesterday showed their collapse under the bomb blitz.
It follows other pontoon crossings being destroyed in the Kursk offensive — during which Zelensky’s forces captured the town of Sudzha.
A Telegram channel from Russia said the bridge strikes were evidence that Ukraine was “not abandoning its plan to reach the Kursk-Rylsk highway”.
Analysts believe Ukraine forces could make a dash to grab the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant.
Missiles supplied by North Korea were also blitzed in an attack on Soldatskoye.
Meanwhile, in the Middle East yesterday, Israeli civilians were killed in a suspected terrorist ambush.
Three men were shot on the Allenby Bridge between Jordan and Israel. Rocket fire was also reported from Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in Gaza.
Sir Keir denied claims that the US was angry with the UK’s decision to suspend some arms export licences to Israel.
He said: “We have been talking to the US beforehand and afterwards. They understand the decision that we have taken.” PM Sir Keir Starmer is set to fly to Washington on Friday for war talks[/caption] He will meet US President Joe Biden amid more bloodshed in Ukraine and Israel[/caption]
