Former Rep. Liz Cheney said she would be voting for Vice President Kamala Harris, a Democrat, for president.

Cheney served as part of GOP House leadership before she was ousted in 2021 and then later lost her primary in Wyoming in 2022 to a candidate backed by former President Donald Trump. She is the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, who served with former President George W. Bush.

The former Republican congresswoman made the endorsement during a speaking event at Duke University. There, identifying herself as a "conservative," she reiterated her stance that Trump was a "danger" to democracy.

"I don't believe we have the luxury of writing in candidates names, particularly in swing states," Cheney said at Duke, according to video circulating on X.

"And as a conservative, as someone who believes in and cares about the Constitution, I have thought deeply about this," she added. "And because of the danger that Donald Trump poses, not only am I not voting for Donald Trump, but I am voting for Kamala Harris."

The Harris campaign released a Wednesday evening press release touting Cheny's endorsement.

"The Vice President is proud to have earned Congresswoman Cheney's vote. She is a patriot who loves this country and puts our democracy and our Constitution first," campaign chair Jen O'Malley Dillon said.

Cheney was one of two Republican lawmakers who served on the congressional committee investigating the January 6 attack alongside former GOP Rep. Adam Kinzinger. She also voted to impeach Trump in 2021 following the riot.

She has been ringing the bell about the potential consequences of a second Trump term for years, but her comments this week marked the first time she officially endorsed Harris.

Cheney warned last year that "there's no question" Trump would refuse to leave office if he wins in November.

Several Republicans have already endorsed Harris, including more than 200 GOP staffers who worked for both Bush presidents, Sen. John McCain and Sen. Mitt Romney.

Cheney's former colleague, Kinzinger, spoke at the Democratic National Convention earlier this month and officially endorsed Harris.
