‘His Three Daughters’ Review | An Extraordinary and Intimate Look At the Complexities Of Family

Tackling a story about familial bonds can be very tricky. The story can get melodramatic and derail everything. However, now and then we see a story that makes us think about our family’s dynamics. Azazel Jacobs’ upcoming Netflix film ‘HIS THREE DAUGHTERS’ is a brilliant addition to the films that make viewers understand family dynamics, involving great performances from Carrie Coon, Elizabeth Olsen, and Natasha Lyonne.

His Three Daughters primarily focuses on three siblings getting together to take care of their ailing father. Katie (Carrie Coon), Christina (Elizabeth Olsen), and Rachel (Natasha Lyonne) are from different backgrounds and have different personalities. However, they come together to take care of their father, striving to bring him comfort during his final days. As the story progresses, viewers get to know that there are a lot of things that the trio doesn’t know about each other. Additionally, it is revealed that Katie and Christina are blood sisters, while Rachel is their step-sister. Katie is bossy and even though she is struggling to keep things controlled in her house, she doesn’t take much time in showing authority as soon as the siblings get together. Christina is the calm one and evades all the arguments, trying to keep everything under control. Meanwhile, Rachel looks like she doesn’t care about anything, but in reality, she does and shares a great relationship with her father.

With the siblings coming together for possibly one last time, they confront their differences and examine their relationships with each other.

From the very first frame, it is quite evident that this is not going to be an easy ride. The relationship between the siblings is examined thoroughly and in a way that is relatable. The film’s strength lies in its sharp writing. Written by Jacobs himself, the screenplay masterfully captures the complexities of sibling relationships and the emotional rollercoaster that comes with familial obligations. Although the Netflix film features several heavy moments, the filmmaker-writer has inserted an apt amount of humor to maintain a balanced tone. On top of that, he mixes the elements of conflict and heart-breaking honesty to create a narrative that feels authentic. Every character has its moments to shine and is nuanced. Jacobs does a wonderful in giving every character their stories and showcasing their struggles.

Additionally, the writing also excels in its exploration of themes such as unresolved trauma, regret, and grief. Jacobs makes it quite evident that the story is not just about sisters mourning the father’s impending loss, it’s also about these siblings and the choices they made in the past. The claustrophobic atmosphere of a New York apartment adds layers of intense emotions bubbling beneath the surface.

Apart from writing, the impeccable performances of the trio make His Three Daughters such a profound experience. Carrie Coon is brilliant as her character always remains on the edge. She tries controlling the atmosphere by showing toughness but beneath all that toughness, there’s a vulnerable woman who wants to make things right. Meanwhile, Elizabeth Olsen brilliantly captures the emotions of a mother missing her child while managing to take care of her father. Over the years, Olsen has played several multi-layered characters, but this might be her finest performance to date. She is compelling and some moments see her overshadowing the other two actors.

However, it’s Natasha Lyonne who takes the viewers by storm with a performance that should make producers understand that she is made for leading roles. Lyonne’s natural charisma and wit make Rachel an unforgettable character. She navigates her place in the family, deflecting pain with sarcasm while remaining deeply loyal to her father. The chemistry between the actors is undoubtedly a highlight and takes people on a heartfelt journey. The father played Jay O. Sanders remains absent from our screens for 95% of the film. But when he does arrive, he completely knocks it out of the park with an amazing performance.

It is one of those films that manages to show that love and resentment can co-exist in a relationship. Additionally, it is also about how a family can fall apart and come together again. Through the film’s leading characters, it prompts viewers to think about their relationships and struggles.

Overall, His Three Daughters is a touching and thought-provoking exploration of familial bonds and relationships. Director Azazel Jacobs stitches an intimate portrait of three sisters struggling to mend their differences while confronting loss. It is one of the year’s finest films. A must-watch!

His Three Daughters releases tomorrow in theatres, while it will be available for streaming on Netflix from September 20.
