Germany and Canada Boost Military Aid to Ukraine

Germany and Canada have announced additional military support for Ukraine, pledging to supply more self-propelled howitzers, rockets, and tanks. Germany committed to sending 12 additional Panzerhaubitze 2000 self-propelled howitzers, worth €150 million ($166 million), Defense Minister Boris Pistorius revealed at a meeting of the Ukraine Contact Group at the U.S. Ramstein Air Base.

These howitzers will come from industry deliveries, with six arriving by the end of 2024 and the remainder in 2025.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, attending the meeting, emphasized the need for more weapons to reclaim territory, especially in the heavily contested Donetsk region. The Panzerhaubitze 2000, a 155 mm gun capable of loading 60 shells in under 12 minutes, is already part of Ukraine’s arsenal, with at least 28 in operation and 18 more previously pledged.

Germany also plans to deliver 77 Leopard 1A5 tanks in collaboration with Denmark and the Netherlands in the near future.

Canada announced a new defense aid package, including 80,840 motors for decommissioned CRV7 air-to-surface rockets and 1,300 warheads. These will be delivered in the coming months, Canadian Defense Minister Bill Blair confirmed.

Canada had already pledged 2,300 decommissioned CRV7 rocket motors in June and will assist in training Ukrainian pilots for F-16 jets, along with providing decommissioned M113 and Coyote armored vehicle chassis.
