He continued to enthrall viewers with films such as Gravity and Roma, garnering universal acclaim from critics as well as audiences. After stitching brilliant stories for the big screen, the Academy Award-winning filmmaker is now back with another compelling tale, making his small-screen debut with the Apple TV+ series ‘Disclaimer’. Based on the novel by Renée Knight, the series tells the story of a renowned journalist named Catherine Ravenscroft (Cate Blanchett) who lives happily with her husband, Robert (Sacha Baron Cohen). However, her world is turned upside down when she finds herself being a prominent character in a novel based on something that took place several years ago.

As soon as she and her husband, Robert (Cohen), return home, they celebrate the victory with a glass of wine. Before going to bed, Catherine checks the mail that she has received and finds out that one of the packages consists of a book. When she opens the package, Catherine is shocked to learn that the novel chillingly mirrors her own life. It reveals her deepest, most closely guarded secrets. The shock is palpable as Catherine realizes this novel could destroy everything that she holds dear, including her relationships with her husband and their son Nicholas (Kodi Smit-McPhee).

From the very first few minutes, ‘Disclaimer’ doesn’t shy away from showcasing the psychological torment that Catherine undergoes as she tries to uncover the identity of the secretive author. The story unravels, taking audiences on an intense and emotionally charged journey. On the other hand, it also captures the exploration of guilt, shame, and the lengths to which one will go to protect their reality.

Once again, he creates a project that is visually stunning and features an emotionally resonant story. However, viewers would have to be a little patient with this series as it is a slow burn. Each episode meticulously showcases the struggles faced by the characters. Throughout seven episodes, ‘Disclaimer’ is a testament to his ability to tell spellbinding stories.

When it comes to performances, Cate Blanchett is a powerhouse in ‘Disclaimer’. Her portrayal of a woman who is struggling to fight her inner demons is both haunting and relatable. Just like any of her previous roles, Blanchett conveys her character’s feelings in the most authentic way possible. She masterfully captures her character’s vulnerabilities and showcases how she is trying everything to reclaim control of her life. It is one of those performances that will linger in the minds of viewers for a very long time and make her a favorite for awards season.

Meanwhile, Sacha Baron Cohen delivers a nuanced performance as Robert. His portrayal of a man whose perfect little paradise has come crashing down is compelling and sympathetic. Cohen always brings a raw intensity to all his characters and this one is no different. In certain sequences, he even outshines Blanchett with his impeccable performance. On the other hand, Leila George steals the show with her sultry performance. She plays the younger version of Catherine Ravenscroft and brings a new layer of the character’s life in front of the audience. George has always been a wonderful actor and I hope, this role makes Hollywood understand that she is well capable of leading a big project.

Kevin Kline also delivers a memorable performance, bringing depth and gravitas to his character. He is surely one to watch out for in this series. Moreover, Lesley Manville is perfect in her role. Impeccable performances by the case make this series better than how great it already is and enhance the viewing experience.

In the middle of great performances and stunning visuals, ‘Disclaimer’ beautifully explores the thin line between right and wrong. The series doesn’t provide easy answers. Instead, it presents a morally ambiguous world where truth has devastating consequences. As the series progresses, audiences become an integral part of the journey that sees Catherine making compromises she has made in her career. Although the series includes revenge as one of the most important aspects of the narrative, it also challenges the notion of revenge as a straightforward path to justice. Revenge can consume a person and make them forget that things can go haywire at any moment. It is a two-edged sword and can be lethal for the victim as well as the culprit.
