The shocking shooting happened in the city of Palmas de Monte Alto, in Brazil, where the footballer was from.

The shooter – who has not been identified – fled towards the neighbouring city of Guanambi.

No arrests have yet been made.

The shooting is currently being investigated by Palmas de Monte Alto Police, who have no known motive for the crime.

Police are believed to be looking for a motive to help clarify the case.

Santos had won the  2nd Sitio Brutus Football Championship, an amateur football tournament the night he was killed.

Santos was well-known and liked in the local area, having played for several amateur football teams in the area.

The Liga Desportiva Guanambiense, the entity responsible for the tournament that Santos won the night of his death, have officially suspended matches in the Guanbaniese Municipal Championship until September 10, in a statement on their Instagram.

The account also paid tribute to Santos on the day of his death, writing that he was “a great human being.”

Colleagues have paid tributes on social media, with one writing on Santos’ Instagram profile: “Go in peace and with God, brother! You leave a huge void! We will all miss you.”

Santos was buried on September 2 at the Malhada do Meio Cemetery in the city.
